Fall Family Portraits in the Mountains of Conifer, Colorado

Sometimes portrait sessions remind us that lifeβ€”like the Colorado weatherβ€”doesn’t always go according to plan, but beauty always finds its way in. This recent family portrait session in Conifer, Colorado was the perfect example.

We started the day under gray skies with the forecast calling for rain. I kept checking the horizon, wondering if we’d have to reschedule. But as the afternoon unfolded, the clouds began to lift, and what could have been a gloomy day turned into a golden, peaceful evening in the mountains.

We started the day under gray skies with the forecast calling for rain. I kept checking the horizon, wondering if we’d have to reschedule. But as the afternoon unfolded, the clouds began to lift, and what could have been a cold and gloomy day turned into a lovely, peaceful evening in the mountains.

A Family of Four, Full of Love

This family of four brought so much light to the session. Mom and Dad arrived with their sweet 2-year-old boy and their brand-new 2-month-old baby, ready to soak in the beauty of the mountains together.

The toddler, curious and playful, kept everyone smiling with his energy, while the littlest one was snug in his parents’ armsβ€”calm, content, and along for the ride. Watching them together reminded me of how quickly these early years fly by, and how important it is to capture each stage along the way.

When the Aspens Aren’t What We Expect

Like many families in the fall, this family was hoping for the golden glow of aspen trees to frame their portraits. We had selected a beautiful location with clusters of aspens that I had scouted out, but when we arrived the day of the session, we discovered that the leaves had already fallen.

While the aspens weren’t shining in their usual fall brilliance, the mountains had other gifts to offer. We shifted focus, and headed over to the peaceful pond with stunning mountain views to use as our backdrop. The still water reflected the family beautifully, and the forested hills reminded us of Colorado’s timeless beauty.

Portraits That Tell Their Story

We captured the full family together, snuggled close against the mountain backdrop, as well as sweet individual moments:

  • Mom cradling her newborn with soft light on their faces

  • Dad chasing their toddler near the pond

  • The brothers togetherβ€”tiny and new, already beginning a lifelong bond

Each image felt like a story in itselfβ€”one of love, resilience, and savoring a fleeting season of life.

Why Conifer Is Perfect for Family Portraits

Nestled just outside of Denver, Conifer, Colorado is one of my favorite spots for family photography. Even when nature surprises us with weather or early leaf changes, there are endless backdropsβ€”mountain ridges, hidden ponds, wide meadowsβ€”that give each session a timeless Colorado feel.

Ready to Capture Your Own Family Story?

If you’ve been dreaming about updating your family portraits, know that no matter the season, Colorado’s beauty always delivers. More importantly, your family’s love and connection are what make the portraits shine.

Newborn Portraits in Highlands Ranch | A Family of Seven Children

Every newborn session is special, but when a new baby arrives in a family of seven children, the love and excitement in the room is multiplied in the most beautiful way. Recently, I had the joy of welcoming this incredible family into my Highlands Ranch home studio for their newborn session. With six older siblings eager to celebrate their new brother or sister, the energy was both lively and heartwarming.

Every newborn session is special, but when a new baby arrives in a family of seven children, the love and excitement in the room is multiplied in the most beautiful way. Recently, I had the joy of welcoming this incredible family into my Highlands Ranch home studio for their newborn session. With six older siblings eager to celebrate their new brother or sister, the energy was tender and heartwarming. This was the first time the family had ever had newborn portraits taken, so it was extra special.

A Full House of Love

There’s something magical about photographing a large family. The dynamics, the laughter, the curiosity of the younger kids, and the tenderness of the older onesβ€”it all weaves together into portraits that are layered with meaning. This family was no exception. Each child brought their own personality into the session, making it a true celebration of love, joy, and togetherness.

The older siblings were so sweet and protective, while the little ones were fascinated by their brand-new sibling. Watching them gather close for portraits, you could feel how cherished this new baby already is.

In the Studio

My home studio in Highlands Ranch was the perfect space for this busy session. We captured a mix of images, including:

  • Sweet swaddled portraits of the newborn alone

  • Group shots of all seven siblings together (a rare and treasured image for mom and dad!)

  • Tender family portraits with everyone snuggled in close

Why Newborn Portraits Matter for Large Families

For parents of big families, a newborn session is more than just about the babyβ€”it’s about honoring the whole family as it grows and shifts with each new arrival. These portraits become part of the family’s legacy, capturing not just how the children look in this season, but also the unique way they interact with and love one another.

A Session to Remember

This newborn session was such a joyful reminder of how much beauty exists in the chaos of a big family. Seven children may mean extra giggles, wiggles, and a little unpredictability, but it also means seven times the love, seven times the laughter, and seven times the memories captured.

Booking Your Newborn Session in Highlands Ranch

Whether you have one child or seven, your family’s story deserves to be documented with care and artistry. My Highlands Ranch studio is designed to welcome families of all sizes, offering a comfortable and calm space where we can create timeless portraits together.

Daniel’s Park is such a beautiful place for sunset family portraits near Highlands Ranchβ€”grassy hills, wide open skies, and those breathtaking views of the Front Range. We scheduled the session for golden hour, and the light did not disappoint.

Some moments feel like the closing of one chapter and the opening of another, and this family portrait session at Daniel’s Park was exactly that kind of bittersweet beauty.

Mom and Dad arrived with their two sonsβ€”a family that has spent years building memories together in Colorado. The oldest is already off at college, navigating the next steps of life, and the younger is just about to begin his own college adventure. It’s a time of change, pride, and deep love… and the perfect moment to capture their bond before the next big chapter begins.

A Perfect Evening at Daniel’s Park

Daniel’s Park is such a beautiful place for sunset family portraits near Highlands Ranchβ€”grassy hills, wide open skies, and those breathtaking views of the Front Range. We scheduled the session for golden hour, and the light did not disappoint. As the sun dipped lower, it bathed the landscape in a warm, honeyed glow, wrapping the family in light that seemed to echo the love they share.

More Than Just Photographs

For Mom and Dad, this session was more than just updated family photosβ€”it was a chance to pause, breathe in this moment, and hold onto it before both boys head out into the world.

We talked about how quickly the years have passed. Sometimes in the midst of the chaos of raising kids, we don’t realize how fast time is flying by. That’s why it’s so important to document these transitions. These portraits are a reminder that while life changes, the love at the center of it all stays strong.

Why Summer Is the Perfect Season for Family Portraits in Littleton, CO

Who thinks about getting their family portraits taken in the summer? If you're like most people, you probably wait until the fall family photo season rolls aroundβ€”just in time for golden leaves, cozy sweaters, and those all-important holiday card deadlines. And honestly? I get it! Fall is undeniably beautiful here in Littleton, Colorado. But today, I want to make the case for something a little different.

If you're looking for a session that feels relaxed, vibrant, and full of life, summer might just be the best time of year for family portraitsβ€”especially with young kids.

Why You Might Be Overlooking the Best Time for Family Photos

Fall tends to get all the attention when it comes to scheduling family photo sessions, and it's easy to see why. The leaves are changing, the air is crisp, and the holidays are right around the corner. It's a season that naturally tugs at our sense of nostalgia and tradition.

But here's what no one tells you: fall is also busy. Between back-to-school schedules, sports, extracurriculars, and preparing for the holidays, it’s not always the most relaxed time to wrangle your family into coordinated outfits and head out for portraits.

That’s why I love offering summer family portrait sessions in Littleton, COβ€”and why I think you’ll love them too.

5 Reasons to Book Your Family Portraits This Summer

1. Summer is FUNβ€”and it shows in your photos

Kids are happiest when they’re having fun. And summer is full of it! Long days, barefoot adventures, and carefree evenings create the perfect atmosphere for natural, joy-filled family portraits. When everyone’s relaxed and playful, it makes for the most genuine smiles and real connection.

2. Gorgeous weather = gorgeous photos

Let's be honest: no one likes shivering in a cute sweater while pretending not to be freezing during a fall session. In the summer, the weather is warm and goldenβ€”perfect for sunset sessions where you can wear light, breezy dresses and let your kids run barefoot through the grass or sand without worry.

3. More flexibility in your schedule

With school out and many families staying closer to home, summer often offers more flexibility for booking. You’re not battling homework, bedtimes, and fall obligationsβ€”making it easier to plan a session at just the right time of day (hello, golden hour!).

4. Lush, colorful backdrops

Littleton’s parks, trails, and open spaces come alive in the summer. Everything is vibrant, trees are fully leafed out, and the sunlight is rich and golden. From rolling fields to mountain views, summer in Colorado offers endless options for stunning, outdoor family portraits.

5. Get ahead of the holiday rush

Imagine this: it’s October, and your holiday cards are already ordered, printed, and ready to mailβ€”because you had your family portraits taken back in July. No scrambling for outfits, no last-minute sessions, and no added stress in the busiest time of year. Sounds pretty amazing, right?

What to Expect from a Summer Family Portrait Session

When you book with me, you’re getting more than just beautiful photosβ€”you’re getting a full-service experience. From our first phone consultation to the final delivery of your artwork, I’ll guide you every step of the way.

Let Kids Be Kids | Littleton Family Photographer

When it comes to photographing kids, it's important to remember that they are their own unique individuals with their own personalities, interests, and quirks! In order to capture authentic and meaningful photos, it's crucial to let them be themselves during the photo session.

Photo of toddler girl wearing lace and ruffle dress and staring at the camera while mother giggles in the background.

When kids feel free to be who they are, they're going to be more comfortable and relaxed, and this will shine through in the photographs! This means letting them express themselves in their own way, whether that means being silly, playful, or even a little shy.

By allowing kids to be themselves, you'll not only get more genuine and natural photos, but you'll also be able to capture their true character and spirit.

Photo of toddler girl sitting in a peacock chair with a giant smile.

These are the photos that you'll cherish for years to come, as they truly represent who your child is, right now, and the special moments you share together.

I’m a huge believer in negotiating with toddlers (and older kids too). Remember, a little bargaining with the kiddos can go a long way! :)
